Abstract

Fibrin-rich clots can be particularly difficult to remove during mechanical thrombectomy because of their firm composition and resistance to conventional stent retriever techniques. This study evaluated a low-temperature plasma process used to modify stent retrievers with a fibrinogen coating designed to improve interaction with fibrin-rich thrombi.

In vitro testing demonstrated improved capture of fibrin-rich clots using the modified devices. Testing was performed in a United Biologics silicone flow model, with clots positioned within the M1-correlate of the vascular model to evaluate clot-device interaction under pulsatile flow conditions.
